POV: you’re under the care of two of the best wild $POV: you’re under the care of two of the best wildlife veterinarians in the state It’s great news for this American Red-bellied Turtle (26-5584) who arrived with a shell fracture after being hit by a car. Upon further x-ray examination, our staff found a surprise- an embedded hook in the esophagus. The first extraction attempt prior to the shell fracture repair was unsuccessful due to the hook’s difficult positioning and deep embedment. A few days later, our Medical Director, Dr. Horgan, DACZM and Staff Veterinarian, Dr. Tess did a contrast test to verify precise location in the esophagus then performed a scoping procedure. Once the location was confirmed, they made a surgical incision to reach the hook and back it out to the incision site. They quickly clipped the barb, successfully removing the hook then suturing the incision site closed. This turtle will continue to be closely monitored under supportive care for about 8 weeks until the shell fracture has stabilized enough to remove the supporting hardware.$
