A Rare Rescue – Burrowing Owl Finds Hope at SFWC

At the South Florida Wildlife Center, every rescue tells a story of resilience, hope, and the power of community. Recently, we had the privilege of caring for a rare and threatened species: a burrowing owl, brought to us after a harrowing encounter on the roads of Weston, Florida.

The Rescue

On a Saturday evening, a concerned resident spotted the small owl near the intersection of Weston Hills and Royal Palms Boulevard. Unable to fly and clearly in distress, the owl had suffered a damaged wing, likely the result of a vehicle strike. The resident quickly contacted Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue (BSFR), who responded to the call.

Firefighters carefully secured the owl, providing immediate care to ensure its safety and comfort. The bird was kept under close observation overnight before being transported to the South Florida Wildlife Center in Fort Lauderdale the following morning for specialized evaluation and treatment.

A Rare and Protected Species

The burrowing owl is a unique and valued part of South Florida’s ecosystem. Unlike most owls, these small, ground-dwelling birds nest in open, treeless areas, often burrowing into the ground rather than perching in trees. Unfortunately, their habitat and survival are under constant threat due to urban development, vehicle strikes, and environmental challenges like flooding.

Classified as a State Threatened Species by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), burrowing owls are protected under state law and the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. This means it is illegal to harm, harass, or disturb these birds, their nests, or their eggs without a permit.

The Road to Recovery

Upon arrival at SFWC, the owl underwent a thorough medical evaluation by our expert wildlife team. The damaged wing required careful treatment to ensure proper healing and to give the bird the best chance of returning to the wild. Our team also monitored the owl for signs of stress or infection, as vehicle strikes can often lead to secondary complications.

The owl’s recovery journey is a testament to the importance of collaboration. From the quick actions of the concerned resident and the BSFR team to the specialized care provided at SFWC, this rescue highlights what’s possible when a community comes together to protect its wildlife.

Why It Matters

Burrowing owls play a vital role in South Florida’s ecosystem, helping to control insect and rodent populations. Their presence is a sign of a healthy environment, and every effort to protect them contributes to the balance of our natural world.

This rescue also serves as a reminder to stay vigilant on the roads and to drive cautiously in areas where wildlife may be present. Simple actions, like slowing down and staying alert, can save lives—both human and animal.

How You Can Help

  • Report Injured Wildlife: If you see an injured animal, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator immediately.
  • Support Wildlife Care: Donations to organizations like SFWC help provide the resources needed to rescue, rehabilitate, and release animals like this burrowing owl.

A Brighter Future

Thanks to the quick actions of the community and the dedicated care provided at SFWC, this burrowing owl now has a chance to heal and return to its natural habitat. Together, we can ensure that South Florida’s wildlife continues to thrive for generations to come.
