Patient of the Month: Brown Booby

Every patient we receive at the South Florida Wildlife Center (SFWC) offers us an opportunity to deepen our understanding of local wildlife and strengthen our commitment to their well-being. Our mission is made possible through your unwavering support.

In this month’s “Patient of the Month” story, we introduce you to a remarkable survivor, a juvenile Brown Booby, whose journey to recovery is nothing short of inspiring.

A Precarious Discovery:

On September 25th a group of concerned anglers at a Pompano Beach fishing pier made a heartwarming discovery. At the end of the pier, they found a juvenile Brown Booby, unable to take flight. Worried about the bird’s condition, they promptly reported it to the Pompano Beach City Animal Control. The Road to Recovery The rescue mission was swiftly initiated, with the dedicated team from Pompano Beach City Animal Control containing and transporting the young bird to our South Florida Wildlife Center for immediate care. An initial examination revealed the harsh reality of the bird’s condition – emaciated and sporting a deep laceration along the left wing that had reached the bone and become infected. Remarkably, radiographs showed that there were no broken bones, providing a glimmer of hope. The treatment plan for this brave patient began with intensive wound care, featuring the application of medical-grade honey bandage wraps.

This particular type of honey is chosen for its remarkable antimicrobial and antibacterial properties, which support the healing process while minimizing the risk of infection.

A Tale of Resilience

In just two days of rehabilitation, the Brown Booby began to show signs of recovery. Most notably, the bird started to eat independently, and the wounds that once seemed insurmountable began to heal.

The dedicated team at SFWC continues to monitor and care for this remarkable patient in our specialized Wildlife Ward, ensuring every possible chance for a successful rehabilitation.
