Happy World Wetlands Day! A wetland is any area Happy World Wetlands Day!

A wetland is any area where water covers the soil either year-round or seasonally. In South Florida, common wetland types include swamps, marshes, bogs, and more.

Wetlands are rich in biodiversity, providing essential habitats for a variety of species. Among the residents are mangroves, alligators, wading birds like herons and ibises, and even otters!

Unfortunately, human activity has led to the degradation of many local wetland habitats. One way you can help protect these ecosystems is by avoiding the pollution of storm drains with harmful chemicals or lawn clippings. If you’re fortunate enough to have a wetland on your property, conserving it is crucial. These habitats are vital sources of food and shelter for local wildlife, so taking steps to protect them helps preserve their ecological value.

Be sure to follow us to learn more about these nature holidays!

Easter Baskets needed! 🧺 Do you have any extra b Easter Baskets needed! 🧺

Do you have any extra baskets with handles at home? Consider donating them to our center in preparation for the upcoming baby season! These baskets play a vital role in our resource center when community members bring in orphaned baby birds that have fallen from their nests.

Once our veterinary team conducts a renest check to assess the bird’s condition, we use the baskets as artificial nests. While the mother bird won’t pick up the baby and return it to the original nest, the basket provides a stable and safe space for her to continue caring for her young. Your donation helps ensure that these vulnerable birds receive the care they need during a critical time!

Please bring these donations by during our business hours, we are open daily from 9:00am-4:30pm.

Happy Gotcha Day, Pomelo! 🐢 Pomelo, one of our r Happy Gotcha Day, Pomelo! 🐢

Pomelo, one of our resident Florida Box Turtles, is celebrating his 2-year anniversary as a wildlife educator! After being taken from the wild while crossing the road, Pomelo was kept in someone’s backyard for 30 years. When the homeowner moved and was unable to take him along, Pomelo was surrendered to our center.

As a native and endemic species of Florida, Pomelo is a wonderful ambassador for our state’s rich biodiversity. He plays a key role in educating the public about the importance of native wildlife, keeping them wild, and their vital contribution to our ecosystem. Box Turtles are named for their unique ability to close their shells tightly like a box when threatened, offering them protection from predators.

To learn more about Pomelo and explore the opportunity to symbolically adopt him, please visit our website: SouthFloridaWildlifeCenter.org.
